Bandage Care

CHECK BANDAGE DAILY - It is important to discourage your pet from chewing the bandage.  It is also important that the bandage stay completely dry.  Keep the bandage covered if your pet needs to go out on a rainy day.  Remove the cover and check for dampness when your pet returns inside.  If the bandage becomes wet, smells bad, or is excessively chewed please contact our office immediately to have the bandage changed.  Bandage changes do come at an additional expense so it is important to monitor your pet closely to keep complications from occuring.

Chemotherapy

Today your pet received IV chemotherapy.  Please remove the bandage from your pet when you get home.

Please be cautious when cleaning up bodily fluid from your pet.  Bodily fluids may contain chemotherapy residues which can be harmful.  Use gloves when cleaning fluids and dedicate an area in your yard to allow them to urinate and defecate.  Choose a low traffic, well drained area.

Monitor the site of IV placement for changes in color and/or swelling.  If you notice any of these please contact our office.

Vomiting although rare can occur with administration of chemotherapy.  It is okay to offer Pepcid or Maalox to help with an upset stomach.  You may also offer a bland diet of boiled rice and boiled chicken.  If nausea persists, please contact a veterinarian.

Please clean the areas around the drain(s) opening daily by gently wiping with a warm, wet washcloth or by using a small amount of hydrogen peroxide.  Please keep your pet in a clean dry area until the drain(s) have been removed and the wounds area completely healed.  Please monitor incision(s) daily for redness, swelling, excessive drainage, heat, or increased pain.  If you notice any of these or have any questions please contact our office.

E-Collar

An E-collar has been included today as part of the treatment for your pet.  It is imperative that this stay on at night when you are asleep and any other time you are not available to monitor your pet.  By not using the E-collar you may complicate the healing of your pet and incur additional expense as a result.
